The National Institute of Cardiology (NICVD) has crossed another milestone by launching Pakistan's first program on Pediatric Cardiac Electrophysiology (Cardiovascular Diseases in Children). According to the NIVD spokesperson, an 8-year-old boy living in Sukkur was suffering from heart disease with a heart rate of 200 beats per minute. The electrophysiology study and ablation procedure of this child was done absolutely free at NICVD Karachi. This is the first time the procedure has been performed on a young child in Pakistan. This is a great achievement achieved under the supervision of Dr Muhammad Mohsin. Dr. Mohsin joined NICVD after 2 years of training in Pediatric Electrophysiology from the University of Alberta, Canada and today he is working as an Assistant Professor, Pediatric Cardiac Electrophysiology at NICVD. He said that this procedure was performed successfully without any complication. Heart problems in which the heart becomes too fast or too slow are not uncommon in children. Specialist doctors can treat these children through a special procedure called electrophysiology study and ablation. Earlier, there were no pediatric electrophysiologists in Pakistan due to which these children have not been able to get proper treatment till now. He added that these complex procedures require cardiologists, pediatric cardiologists, technologists, anesthesiologists and electrophysiologists who are present at the NICVD. Professor Azam Shafqat (Head of Electrophysiology, NICVD) said that NICVD is one of the foremost institutions in the country for the treatment of heart disease, but previously only heartbeat in adults. Was used to treat heart disease, but now treatment for heart disease in children has also begun.
